(above) character lineup 1.0, currently missing 1 character
Canary 751 is the next short film I'm excited to get underway. It's very effects-heavy with the characters, using bitmap-fill lines in Flash and stencil alpha clips in After Effects. The skin textures are all high-res galaxy images that I've animated to swirl and pulse constantly. An example of the finished effect can be found in this clip.
I got the idea for this film while listening to albums by Max Richter and Mich Gerber, both ambient music artists. While listening to the music, I started doodling things like this:
I knew I wanted it to be another dialogue-less short that relied solely on the character animation and music, and because I love dinosaurs so much, I gravitated towards a parasaur-like design (my second favorite dinosaur, the first being a velociraptor). But I also wanted it to have something to do with space, since that's what the music evoked, so the design became a little more whimsical. And because it had that sci-fi tilt to it, it was the perfect excuse to experiment with starry effects and glowing lines, which is something I've wanted to do for a while.
I'm almost done with the designs and the storyboarding, so after I post the final designs, I'll start animating!
