the many projects of 2015-2016

Hey friends! Carolyn here! It’s been a while! So here’s a little bit about what’s been going on here on my end of things:

Canary 751 is still in pre-production, mainly because of various events in my life that kept putting it on the backburner. But I continue to chip away at it almost every day. The final bits of the story are nailed down thanks to some story help from my friend Mallory Fencil, which just leaves about the final 30% to be storyboarded and placed in the animatic.

Some of the character designs have been reworked, and some background character designs have been added to the website’s character page.

For those of you who have been fans of Canary 751 from day one, wow, you guys sure are patient, and I want to let you know that I’m really inspired by your commitment and excitement! When I first started working on it and posting stuff about it, I was really thrilled about the response. If you’re frustrated, let me tell ya, I am too! I wanted it done yesterday! But I don’t give up on projects I believe in, especially one that’s come this far since 2012. Can you believe I once planned this film as a 5 minute short? Well, that might still be in the plan as a preview of sorts…

"Ruslan and Ludmilla" short film

As that’s still cooking on the backburner, I’m also working on animated shorts. Right now, I’m focusing on a 5 min short to the “Ruslan and Ludmilla” overture, starring two warring princesses who have to work together to defeat an evil that threatens both their kingdoms. It’s a cute short in a more graphic style that I’ve been kicking around, and am now almost finished with the preproduction. The animatic is 90% done!

It hasn’t all been personal projects, however. Here are some projects I have worked on in the last two years:

"The Creation of the World" symphony project

The Santa Barbara symphony has recently been breaking into the multimedia performance trend, and commissioned me to animate a 3 minute segment to accompany one of their performances of Milhaud's "Creation of the World." It was an interesting and challenging experiment in simplified timed animation with the intent of being projected above an orchestra. The performance was a hit with the audience!

I animated a 1:30 min trailer for a film project called The Dragon Prince by Trico Films. The wonderfully talented Gillian Grossman illustrated the backgrounds for this one. You might remember her from her work on Reversal of the Heart! It was a fun and challenging project to complete!

(Nickelodeon Project)

I animated several scenes for a Nickelodeon video game pilot (and possible TV pilot) that’s complete and still making the rounds at headquarters. It was directed by my pal Joseph Rothenberg and it was very fun to work on! Unfortunately the content is proprietary, but when it's released, I'll post what I did on the project!

Some folks have recommended that I set up a Patreon, and while I love Patreon and support many artists on there, it’s not really my speed. I would be terrible at it, and I don’t wanna disappoint anyone haha. But it’s super awesome to know that some of you guys would support me! 😊

Every year I make loose promises to be more active on the Facebook page or on the websites, and I do try, however my other social media accounts are a bit more active and showcase what I’m working on more often. If you are interested in seeing more current things from me, you can follow me on the accounts below. Feel free to say hi or ask questions, too!

As a side note (and as if this weren’t enough), I am also writing a 6-book fantasy series! I don’t talk about it all that often on my social media, and when I do, it’s more like general writer whining. I do illustrate for my books a lot, though, so the chances are that any illustrations that aren’t attached to an animation project are related to The Books. This series I’ve been working and reworking since, oh, 2006-ish? Something like that. But it’s another project I’ve been picking away at, and it’s in the final stages of writing. As it gets closer to finishing, I’ll talk about it a lot more!

Anyways, you guys are awesome, and thank you so much for your support and love!
